Those are the words I’ve been waiting to hear since Cloverfield came out in theaters last January. JJ Abrams ran a panel at Wondercon this past week/end to discuss his latest hit television show Fringe and while on the panel he was asked about the Cloverfield sequel and what’s going on with that. Below is his response.

We’re actually working on an idea right now,” Abrams told the packed crowd. “The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision. If you’re going to do something, it should be because you’re really inspired to do it. It doesn’t really have to mean anything, doesn’t mean it will work, but it means we did it because we cared, not because we thought we could get the bucks. We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we’re playing with, which means there will be something that’s connected to ‘Cloverfield,’ but I hope it happens sooner than later because the idea is pretty sweet.

So there you have it, they are currently working on something and, at least, JJ wants it to happen sooner than later. So that’s good news for all us Cloverfield fans out there and it also means that this website will have a purpose again! So keep this site bookmarked and add us to your twitter feed (click the bird in the upper right) to stay up on all the latest happenings with the sequel. If/when this whole thing goes down I plan on opening up a new forum dedicated strictly to Cloverfield, unlike the last one that was just a mess of stuff.

I may be a party of one, but I maintain that Cloverfield is THE best movie I have ever seen. I am an enthusiastic film viewer, so this is not an ill-considered or hastily made statement. Here are some of the many reasons why I regard this to be such a great movie:

    1. The people react plausibly to the threat: From disbelief-to horror- to paniced flight! (very nuanced 9-11-01 application)

    2. The threat becomes more pervasive; aggressive and deadly as “parasites” are being described by news personel. This scene serves to rachet up the vunerability and helplessness of the charecters. The Military reaction to the parasites hightens the deepening sense of doom. Troops try to function despite their barely concealed panic as they watch the parasites attack and deposit eggs in the host humans -who subsequently explode when the eggs hatch.

    3. The cinamatography is very Zen. What you don’t see, and don’t know is as important to the film as what you do see and know. You share the charecter’s uncertainty of what is going on. Newscasters making obvious, absurd, observations with trite “newstalk” commentary perfectly paint the opacity of information that defines this film.

    4. The movie is a heroic love story. After Rob’s brother Jason is killed on the Brooklyn Bridge, and the group is gathered together on the street, you can SEE Rob making the internal decision that he will not abandon Beth. The loyalty of his friends, despite the all-too- apparent folly of going uptown to rescue Beth, only enhances the depth of this phenomenal mission.
    5. NONE of the charecters are gun-tote’n heap big warrior heroes. Just like us, they face their trials and terrors without the All American Solution to Everything: Guns, more Guns, and hey, where’s my Nuke?

I sincerely hope that JJ Abrams creates a sequel/prequel or even epilouge to this amazing film. It’s not just the story that makes this film the best; it is the complexity of how it was concieved and created that I find so brilliant!!

    Thanks for your time CJF

DAMNNNN CYNTHIA SNAPPEDDDD very GOOD i felt the vary same way although cloverfield is not my favorite movie, i feel it is the most realistic with the characters not knowing anything and not finding some random guy saying he knows everything about everything and says u gotta rock him in the balls to kill him lol also how Robs mission was to find his girl even tho he could have died or without knowing if she was dead rather then he be head to toe in RPGs on a mission to fuk up clover lol so big props cythia

I have been reading your posts during my morning break, and I have to admit the whole article has been very enlightening and very well composed. I thought I would let you know that for some reason this blog does not view well in IE 8. I wish Microsoft would stop upgrading stuff. I have a question for you. Do you mind exchanging blog roll links? That would be really neat!
