A lot of people have been talking about “Swamp Pop”, the soda / energy drink that shows up during the “10 Cloverfield Lane” trailer. The obvious connection here is that Swamp Pop is similar to the Slusho tie in from the first one, but there’s one small difference, Swamp Pop is a real product and has been for years.

Swamp Pop is a soda drink from Louisiana that has been around since the end of 2012. The domain name, drinkswamppop.com was created on December 8, 2012 and it looks like the first iteration of the website popped up in 2013. You can see it on archive.org in May of 2013. There are also plenty of other articles around the net referencing Swamp Pop in 2013 and 2014, so this is indeed a real product that was not born out of Cloverfield.

There has been a lot of chatter on the unfiction forums and reddit over the last day regarding the tie in that Swamp Pop has, but at this point I’m a little skeptical of any “official” tie in to a viral marketing campaign. It sounds like the movie production team may have approached Swamp Pop and offered to feature their products in the movie, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be any sort of ARG/Viral Marketing tie in between “10 Cloverfield Lane” and Swamp Pop.

A woman named Anna Whitlow recently signed up for an account on unfiction and made the following post:

Hi all!

My name is Anna Whitlow, I’m the PR Manager for Swamp Pop here in Louisiana. Due to a high volume of traffic on our store and through our official contact lines, I’ve been asked to make a statement in regards to our partnership with Paramount and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

We are very honored and excited to be a part of such an exciting movie event, a partnership that started with principal photography in October 2014 when we were approached by the team at Paramount Insurge. As many of you are aware, our line of Swamp Pop soda is featured in the film.

I’ve reached out to Anna and she confirmed to me that she did not make the post on unfiction, I repeat, the real PR rep for Swamp Pop did not make the above post on the unfiction forums. She believes someone must have just grabbed her information from the Swamp Pop website and posted in the forums. Sorry guys.

If I had to guess though, I think that the addition of the “Long-Term Shelter Supply” and the words “You can’t drink just four!” on the Swamp Pop online store are just a way for Swamp Pop to play off of all this new found publicity and doesn’t come at the direction of Paramount’s marketing team.

Who knows what might pop up regarding this in the future though… but for now I think it’s just a local product placement.

I can assure you, as a Moderator on UF – that was NOT anyone official. That was a fake account started by another player to “gamejack” the entire thing. They were caught and dealt with. All you are doing is feeding trolls by making a thing out of this, and feeding them the publicity they want.

People continue to think that Swamp Pop is part of this thing, regardless of whether or not that “PR Person” post was real. This post was just aimed to discuss that. I honestly believe that this movie is not going to get the same marketing treatment that Cloverfield and Super 8 got, but people still like to dig.

By all means, dig, and dig well. 🙂 I simply meant the posting of the troll’s forum post is feeding him. The rest, the spec, everything else, – I don’t presume to tell you how to run your site.

Hey check Swamp Pops store!!! There’s a “long term shelter supply” that is sold out for $4813. Was thinking of ordering some for myself to try it out and that’s the first thing on the store and saw nothing about it here.

The long term shelter supply is definitely mentioned in this post. I’m still not 100% sure of the movie studios involvement in the Swamp Pop marketing stuff. I still think this is just Swamp Pop (which is a real product, and has been for a few years) is just trying to capitalize on the fact that they were shown in the movie.
